What’s the Weather Like in Charleston During the Spring

Spring is known to have some of South Carolina’s best weather. Because of Charleston’s hot and humid summers, many people visit in coast in the cooler months. March highs average around 70 with lows in the 50s. April warms up with highs in the mid-70s and lows near 60. May in Charleston is like summer in many colder cities. Highs usually sit around 80 with lows often staying in the upper 60s. You couldn’t ask for better weather to get outside and explore our breathtaking landscape!

Paddle Within Nature

Paddle through the serene marshes and rivers of the Lowcountry while taking in the stunning landscape and getting a glimpse into the vast wildlife. KAYAKING is a favorite in Charleston among locals and tourists. Kids as young as four can paddle in a tandem kayak, so it’s sure to delight and spark wonder in everyone in your group. If a paddleboard is more your speed, no worries! There are plenty of rental companies that offer them. Our favorite parts to explore are the inlets between Folly Beach and Isle of Palms and the mainland. Shem Creek is also a popular spot for people staying near IOP.

Explore a Local Farmers’ Market

There are plenty of Charleston farmer’s markets in the area to find local goods, locally grown produce, unique Charleston charms, and gourmet foods! In fact, you’ll find a different market in almost every nook and corner of the Holy City. Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, and Sullivan’s Island each have their own farmers’ markets. You’ll find the DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON FARMER’S MARKET in Marion Square and the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market next to Moultrie Middle School. And a favorite among locals, the SUNDAY BRUNCH FARMER’S MARKET at the Pour House on James Island features a myriad of local vendors and live music.

Catch a Colorful Sunset

Just about any view in Charleston will give you a great place to watch a Lowcountry sunset. We always recommend a walk along Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, or Sullivan’s Beach to see the colors in the sky make the water glow. Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve on Folly is a favorite spot among locals! If you’re in Downtown Charleston, Joe Riley Waterfront Park is known for its stunning sunsets and infamous Pineapple Fountain. Or, walk over to the Battery and White Point Garden to watch the sunset over the Charleston Harbor. Another amazing way to enjoy the sunset is with a waterfront dinner on Shem Creek! This hotspot houses countless amazing restaurants that offer fresh seafood and stunning views.

Spend the Day Exploring Historic Charleston

Immerse yourself in United States history and spend some time exploring Downtown Charleston. We suggest a walking tour to take advantage of the amazing spring weather. There are countless things to see and learn that you could easily create your own self-guided walking tour. However, we recommend using a tour company, so you don’t miss out on any of the area’s unique stories. The city has so much to offer from delicious food to world-class art to countless Instagrammable spots. If you’re visiting at the beginning of the month, check out Charleston Art Walk. On the first Friday of every month, more than 40 art galleries in the Holy City are open to the public from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Downtown is also the place for shopping! Start off by strolling through the HISTORIC CHARLESTON CITY MARKET then head over to King Street for upscale stores like Louis Vuitton, Lilly Pulitzer, and more.

Enjoy a Spring Event

Because of the great weather, the Charleston area is filled with spring events throughout the season. In fact, some of our biggest events of the year happen in March, April, and May. The Charleston Wine + Food Festival always takes place in early March for nearly a week. Try delicious foods, learn from famous chefs, taste wines from across the globe, and experience concerts from hit artists! There’s no secret why this festival is one of the best Charleston spring activities. If you’ve always wanted to get inside of the stunning historical homes of Charleston, you won’t want to miss the Festival of House and Gardens. For about three weeks from mid-March to April, some of the country’s most beautiful homes open their doors to the public for tours and small events.
