Discover the 5 Best Spots to See Dolphins in Charleston

1. Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve

The Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve provides the best spot on Folly Beach to get a glimpse of bottlenose dolphins. You’re almost guaranteed to see at least one fin peak out of the water in this area of the beach. Plus, the preserve offers breathtaking views of the Morris Island Lighthouse and an incredibly relaxing spot along the shore.

2. Charter a Boat

The more of the water you explore, the more likely you are to see dolphins. The easiest way to do this is to charter a boat! Tidal Wave Watersports has a location in Downtown Charleston, Isle of Palms, and a pick-up location in Mount Pleasant. They offer a dolphin watching tour as well as custom charters. Their Jet Ski Safari Adventure is also popular and provides just as much opportunity to see dolphins but with more excitement.

3. Kayak Shem Creek

Bottlenose dolphins frequent Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant which neighbors Isle of Palms. Although this area is a popular spot to have a waterfront meal, locals also love to explore the waterway on both kayak and paddleboard. It allows you to immerse yourself in our stunning and diverse landscape. There are several rental companies in the area, so you don’t have to worry about lugging the equipment around.

4. Bulls Island

Bulls Island is a pristine, wildlife refuge known for an abundance of wildlife and seven miles of undeveloped shoreline. There are no paved roads on the island and can be reached by a year-round ferry run by Coastal Expeditions. Along with the ferry, they offer four different tours that allow for tremendous opportunities to see dolphins and other wildlife.

5. White Point Garden and The Battery

White Point Garden and The Battery provide amazing views of the Charleston Harbor. If you’re exploring Downtown Charleston, you have to stop by, walk along the water, and admire the beautiful live oaks. There’s so much water to see from the park you’re almost guaranteed to see some dolphins!
