3 of the Best Places to Fish on Folly Beach

The Folly Beach Fishing Pier

Editor’s Note: As of 2020, the Folly Beach Pier may be under construction during the time of your visit. The pier will be open during some of the construction, but there is a chance it will be closed during your visit.

The Folly Beach Fishing Pier is arguably the most popular spot to go fishing on Folly Beach. Locals and visitors have been coming to the iconic pier since 1995 and have fond memories of casting a line from the many fishing stations. It’s such a popular attraction that they even hold fishing tournaments here!

Shore Fishing

What’s better than sticking your toes in the sand as you sit back, relax, and wait for a fish to bite? Shore fishing is one of our favorite options for Folly Beach fishing. One of the best spots to cast a line is the Morris Island Lighthouse Trail. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also a local secret known for great fish! The water between Morris Island and Folly Beach forms a sort of funnel that fish are forced to swim through.

Folly Beach Fishing Charters

One of the main benefits of a fishing charter is that you get to be out on the water! There’s something special about feeling the sea breeze and being out on the ocean. Plus, going with a charter means that they provide you with all the gear you’ll need. Here are some of the most popular Folly Beach fishing charters:

About the Charleston RiverDogs

The Charleston RiverDogs are a minor league baseball team that plays in the Class Single-A South Atlantic League. Fun fact: they are an affiliate of the famous New York Yankees! The RiverDogs play their season at their home stadium, Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.

Catching a Game

A RiverDogs game is fun for the whole family! Even if there are members of the family that don’t necessarily enjoy baseball, the RiverDogs are always entertaining. There is always great food and drinks, and the announcer keeps the crowd engaged. Who knows– you might even catch a foul ball!

Local tip: On Friday home games, the stadium has fireworks! This is usually the most popular night for families to go. If you’re over the age of 21, you might consider going on a Thursday for Dollar Beer Night.

Getting Tickets

Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park seats 6,000 people, so the games are rarely completely sold out. This means that you can either plan on going to a game in advance, or wait last-minute and go if you’re looking for something to do! Getting tickets is easy. All you need to do is head to the Tickets & Promotions section of their website and purchase them online!

What Do I Eat at a Charleston RiverDogs Game?

If you ask a local what to eat at a RiverDogs game, the answer will almost always be boiled peanuts. This Southern staple flows freely at these games, but there’s so much more than that! While you have typical baseball cuisine available, other options are surprisingly innovative. Beer Shakes are popular for the adults, and the concession stand that goes by the name of Dog World pumps out specialty hot dogs slathered in every topping imaginable!

3 of the Best Beaches in South Carolina for Families

1. Isle of Palms Beach

Directions to Isle of Palms Beach Parking

Isle of Palms Beach, also known as the Isle of Palms County Park, is the beach you will most likely visit if you stay on Isle of Palms. This beach is one of the most popular in the area, and for good reason. Enjoy walking out on the boardwalk, watch your kids play on the community playground, play volleyball on the sand court, and of course, utilize the beautiful beach. Lifeguards and beach rentals are present during the summer season, and there is usually an ice cream truck waiting with a sweet treat!

Local tip: If you’re staying in a vacation rental within walking distance to the beach, you won’t have to pay for parking at all. Almost every avenue corresponds with a beach access point, and you can walk right onto the beach from any of them.

2. Folly Beach

Directions to Folly Beach County Park

If you’re staying on Folly Beach, heading to Folly Beach County Park will be most convenient for you! Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Folly River, this beautiful beach has visitors every day out of the year. Lifeguards are on duty seasonally, and there is a snack bar during the summer months. Parking costs can vary anywhere from $5 to $10 depending on the season, but we recommend getting an $85 Gold Pass if it’s worth your while for unlimited entry.

3. Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s Island is the local’s beach. This island neighbors Isle of Palms, so it’s very easy to get to. This beach has beautiful views of the Charleston Harbor, and it is common to watch a massive barge float by from time to time. The beach spans just 3.3 miles, but there’s plenty of room. We recommend this beach for families with older children, and you’ll definitely want to visit one of the island’s restaurants after your fun in the sun.

However, parking can be a challenge. There is no set parking lot, so you will have to abide by the parking signs on the side of the road and make sure that all four wheels are off the pavement. Beach access is clearly marked, so once you park, you should have no problem getting on the beach!

Can You Surf at Folly Beach?

Yes! Folly Beach is one of the top places on the Charleston Coast to go surfing. There are a variety of good surf spots along the beach that we will explain below.

Where Can I Surf at Folly Beach?

Here are some of the top spots to catch some waves on Folly:

  • The WashoutThe Washout, also known as Hollywood, has been named the number one spot to go surfing by the experienced surfers in our area. The Washout was created when the infamous Hurricane Hugo wiped out a block of beachfront homes. Now, the wind is able to push across the beach and onto Folly River. It is rumored that this wind creates these incredible swells perfect for surfing.
  • Around the Folly Pier– While you are not allowed to surf within 200 feet of the pier (keep in mind that this might change during construction, maintenance, and repairs), the waters alongside the pier can be a great place to surf at. Surfing is also not allowed here from mid-May to September.
  • 6th Street East– The waves are known for being fair to good here.
  • 10th Street East– 10th Street East is a very popular spot for Folly Beach surfing. The waves don’t break as big as The Washout, but they come close!

Check the Surf Cams

Folly Beach is a surfing town, and there are plenty of surf cams you can use to check the swells. A surf cam is the best way to know the current conditions of the water. That way, you don’t have to pack up your board and get to the beach only to find out that the waves aren’t good that day!

Rent a Board

When you go on vacation, you shouldn’t have to worry about lugging a surfboard around! There are plenty of places to rent a board on Folly Beach. Many of our vacation rentals come with a credit toward beach gear with VayK Gear. You can easily use this credit to rent surfboards for you and your entire family!
