Music Hall History

The Charleston Music Hall is located at 37 John Street and is easy to spot thanks to its eye-catching 19th-century Gothic Revival exterior. These days, visitors can head this way to enjoy everything from theater and comedy shows to concerts and dance performances alike. Constructed in 1849, the Charleston Music Hall was historically referred to as The Tower Depot. It remains one of the oldest buildings on the block and was originally utilized as a passenger station of the South Carolina Railroad. Designed by architect Edward C. Jones, the building was first designed with a three-story story in place which earned it the original moniker. In 1995, the building was purchased by the Bennett-Hofford Company and was transitioned into an arts venue which has remained, much to the delight of audiences, ever since.

Incredible Past Performances

Since becoming an arts venue in the city, the Charleston Music Hall has focused on the goal of creating extraordinary artistic, musical, and theatrical performances for audiences to enjoy year-round. The music hall is designed to promote the best regional, local, and national acts which in turn, will encourage local and community participation in the arts over the long term. One way the Charleston Music Hall has achieved this is by inviting some spectacular performers to the stage! To date, the Charleston Music Hall has hosted everyone from bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs to the likes of David Byrne and Joan Baez to name a few of many.
