Hidden gems in Charleston, SC

French Huguenot Church

The first hidden gem isn’t even hidden! Located in the French Quarter district of downtown Charleston, the French Huguenot Church is the only independent Huguenot church in the United States. The history of this site dates back to the 1680s. The congregation was originally French Protestants who were fleeing religious persecution in Europe. This hidden gem offers an awe-inspiring experience for first-time visitors and long-time residents. This church hiding-in-plane site is a must-see for all visitors!

Pitt Street Bridge

This landmark is more hidden in the traditional sense of the word! Located across the Ravenel Bridge in Mount Pleasant, the Pitt Street Bridge is a wonder to see. This bridge was the original connection from Mount Pleasant to Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms beaches. During the 1920s, the wooden bridge featured a trolley and eventually was widened for vehicle traffic. By 1927 the bridge was obsolete. The bridge still stands today and is used as a fishing pier in addition to an incredible hidden gem to take in Charleston-area history and stunning views!

Morris Island Lighthouse

Looming off the coast of Charleston, the Morris Island Lighthouse is a historical treasure! When the lighthouse was built in 1876, the lighthouse was on land. Over time, the Atlantic Ocean claimed the land, and the lighthouse is now surrounded by water. Over the years, efforts have been made to preserve this hidden gem, an iconic view in the Charleston area. Boat tours are offered to see the lighthouse up close and learn a more detailed history of this iconic Charleston structure.

Deep Water Vineyard

A vineyard in Charleston? Yes! Deep Water Vineyard is located on Wadmalaw Island, and this vineyard is the only domestic winery in Charleston. They offer whites and reds that provide something for everyone. In addition, they also produce their mead! Visitors can tour the vineyard and get an up-close experience of a little-known Charleston secret!

Charleston Tea Garden

Also located on Wadmalaw Island, Charleston Tea Garden is the only tea plantation in the United States. The history here dates back to the 1660s, and since then, the garden has produced the only 100% American-grown tea in the world! They specialize in black and green teas, with nine varieties. Come to the garden on a day trip and see the beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry. They even host factory tours so you can see the tea-making process like never before!
