3 of the Best Places to Fish on Folly Beach

The Folly Beach Fishing Pier

Editor’s Note: As of 2020, the Folly Beach Pier may be under construction during the time of your visit. The pier will be open during some of the construction, but there is a chance it will be closed during your visit.

The Folly Beach Fishing Pier is arguably the most popular spot to go fishing on Folly Beach. Locals and visitors have been coming to the iconic pier since 1995 and have fond memories of casting a line from the many fishing stations. It’s such a popular attraction that they even hold fishing tournaments here!

Shore Fishing

What’s better than sticking your toes in the sand as you sit back, relax, and wait for a fish to bite? Shore fishing is one of our favorite options for Folly Beach fishing. One of the best spots to cast a line is the Morris Island Lighthouse Trail. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also a local secret known for great fish! The water between Morris Island and Folly Beach forms a sort of funnel that fish are forced to swim through.

Folly Beach Fishing Charters

One of the main benefits of a fishing charter is that you get to be out on the water! There’s something special about feeling the sea breeze and being out on the ocean. Plus, going with a charter means that they provide you with all the gear you’ll need. Here are some of the most popular Folly Beach fishing charters:

Can You Surf at Folly Beach?

Yes! Folly Beach is one of the top places on the Charleston Coast to go surfing. There are a variety of good surf spots along the beach that we will explain below.

Where Can I Surf at Folly Beach?

Here are some of the top spots to catch some waves on Folly:

  • The WashoutThe Washout, also known as Hollywood, has been named the number one spot to go surfing by the experienced surfers in our area. The Washout was created when the infamous Hurricane Hugo wiped out a block of beachfront homes. Now, the wind is able to push across the beach and onto Folly River. It is rumored that this wind creates these incredible swells perfect for surfing.
  • Around the Folly Pier– While you are not allowed to surf within 200 feet of the pier (keep in mind that this might change during construction, maintenance, and repairs), the waters alongside the pier can be a great place to surf at. Surfing is also not allowed here from mid-May to September.
  • 6th Street East– The waves are known for being fair to good here.
  • 10th Street East– 10th Street East is a very popular spot for Folly Beach surfing. The waves don’t break as big as The Washout, but they come close!

Check the Surf Cams

Folly Beach is a surfing town, and there are plenty of surf cams you can use to check the swells. A surf cam is the best way to know the current conditions of the water. That way, you don’t have to pack up your board and get to the beach only to find out that the waves aren’t good that day!

Rent a Board

When you go on vacation, you shouldn’t have to worry about lugging a surfboard around! There are plenty of places to rent a board on Folly Beach. Many of our vacation rentals come with a credit toward beach gear with VayK Gear. You can easily use this credit to rent surfboards for you and your entire family!

Yum! 6 of the Best Folly Beach Restaurants to Dine At

fish tacos at folly beach restaurants

When you’re on vacation, food isn’t just a necessity. It’s an experience! Dining at some local hot spots while you’re on vacation is one of the best ways to truly get to know an area, especially on the Charleston Coast. Here are some of our favorite Folly Beach restaurants to try during your getaway!

6 of Our Favorite Restaurants on Folly Beach

1. Jack of Cups Saloon

There’s no place like Jack of Cups. This small eatery is easy to miss, but once you know it’s there, you’ll want to come back for more. The menu offers an eclectic mix of Asian, Indian, and other global flavors. You can come back over and over again and get something different every time– it changes often based on the ingredients that are in season. You’ll always find some type of macaroni and cheese on the menu, but it always has a twist– the green curry mac is one of our favorites!

2. Lost Dog Cafe

Lost Dog Cafe is a staple on Folly Beach. This cozy spot serves breakfast all day along with sandwiches and wraps. We’re partial to their huevos rancheros, but we’ve never had anything from their menu that we didn’t like! You’ll love grabbing lunch here after spending the morning at the beach.

3. Taco Boy

What’s better than sipping a frozen margarita after a day in the sun? Taco Boy is known for delicious Mexican and drinks. We recommend splitting some chips, salsa, guacamole, and queso with the table before ordering a few tacos. If tacos aren’t your style, you can get platters, salads, and quesadillas, too!

4. BLU

If you’re looking for Folly Beach restaurants on the water, head to BLU. The oceanfront dining experience here is casual yet elevated, and the views of the water are beautiful. The menu consists of mostly surf and turf. Indulge in grilled shrimp, scallop risotto, filet mignon, and more.

5. The Crab Shack

Seafood lovers rejoice! The Crab Shack will serve you seafood by the bucket– literally. Get a bucket of steamed oysters for the table before indulging in the wide array of seafood dishes. If there’s a picky eater in your group that doesn’t like seafood, there are a few BBQ options!

6. Chico Feo

Chico Feo’s funky island vibes and delicious, cost-effective food will keep you coming back for more. The dishes here have many different influences, but mostly it’s the Caribbean. The owner spent 12 years in the Caribbean and wanted to bring those flavors to the Charleston Coast. He succeeded, and now we have Chico Feo
